I've been watching a bunch of instructional videos - both online and some on DVDs and have been reflecting on the process of jazz improvisation or improvisation in general. I figure:
1) you learn material be it: a line, a chord progression, a chord melody phrase, a bebop scale fragment - anything 2) you internalize it at different tempos, fingerings, keys all over your instrument ...and over time - it becomes part of your improvisational language. The trick is that it just takes time and by really learning something inside out, clearly enough and with focus - it becomes more ingrained in your playing. Even some ideas that may sound horrible or contrived in the beginning - will over time possibly develop into something unique. Either that - or you can put it aside!
In listening news - I've been checking out some Tomatito and Kurt Rosenwinkel - seemingly different but I love the way their music comes from their heart. There's a lot of soul in their music.
In literature news - I just got this link with an interview with my dad from my brother's blog:
The Sun Interview with A. Samad Said
Cheers, Az
