On some shows and other thoughts on music

I have three shows coming up very soon, the first is this gig with Jazz Mine on Thursday. I'm subbing for the regular guitar player which is pretty cool. I also have a solo gig on Friday at Brainwash in San Francisco and another one at the same venue feat. Shelley on Monday. It's been nice settling in San Francisco and it's starting to feel like a new home for me. In the beginning it was kinda weird because less than a month of being here, I went back to Boston for two gigs - and Boston still felt like home - after all, I did stay there for almost two and half years.

There's a charm to the city and the streets and I especially felt it when I was walking through the corridors of Berklee and realized that it's a whole cycle of life - I didn't recognize most of the people I saw around the campus. Those that I did, were some cats that were about to graduate in a year or so. The cool thing about going to Boston was just meeting up with some friends - Helen, the violin player I performed regularly with, Dave Molk - an amazing composer and good friend as well as Mike Borgida - another cat I jam with all the time. It was also cool to meet up with Carrie Jahde, an awesome drummer who I played with a few times and who was actually going to move to San Francisco (and still is - in a year or so).

What I realize is that the main thing that is fascinating about music is how many people that I've met because I play music - it could be another musician or an interested listener in the audience. In fact, while performing for a gig at Coffee Adventures last week, I met a fellow Malaysian who was working at an office nearby. She noticed that I was Malaysian because she saw a promo postcard that I left at the cashier counter. We struck a conversation and it was kinda nice to meet another Malaysian. Kinda random but nice. (Come to think of it - most of the coolest things always seem random - which they're not I think - they just seem so.)

I also met  a really awesome jazz pianist recently at the John Stowell gig in Berkeley. In fact, the cool thing was that on last Sunday, I got to jam with him at his house. I had a great time playing with him because he is such a musical and experienced player. What a great time feel! I look forward to playing more with him in the future. Another fascinating thing was that he is actually a web product developer and he was relating to me and Shelley about how the new Web 2.0 industry is like in San Francisco. I learned a lot of new things about the computer/web industry here and it was all very new and interesting to me.

Anyway, here I am staring at this computer screen and my thoughts now go towards writing a new song or two. Maybe one. I'll do some baby steps first. Will blog again sometime soon.

Best wishes,
Az
